If you’re feeling nervous about your upcoming MRI scan, you’re not alone. Many people experience MRI claustrophobia or anxiety. If this describes you, there are several things you can do to put your mind at ease before and during your appointment.
Knowledge Is Comfort
One of the most effective ways to avoid MRI anxiety or claustrophobia is to learn about the procedure. Understanding how the machine works, the purpose of your scan, and what to expect during the exam can make you more comfortable and confident on appointment day.
MRI stands for magnetic resonance imaging. These scans do not use radiation, are painless, and rarely cause damage or side effects.
During the exam, the MRI machine uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to take images of a specific area of the body. Your provider uses these images to diagnose or rule out health conditions, monitor health issues, or see how well treatments are working.
If you have any questions about how the scan works, what to expect, or the purpose of your MRI scan, don’t hesitate to ask your provider. One of their jobs is to help you understand your health and treatment options and feel comfortable with your care.
Designed for You
Modern MRI machines are very different from older models. Windsong Radiology has the Philips Ambition 1.5T MRI scanner available for patients who are facing anxieties about getting an MRI. This leading-edge MRI machine Is much more patient-friendly than scanners of the past. In addition to providing advanced imaging technology, the Ambition 1.5T was specifically designed to improve comfort for people who have a fear of confined spaces.
The section of the MRI machine that takes images is called the bore. During the scanning process, a part of your body will be inside the bore. However, you’ll never be in an enclosed space. The bore on the Ambition 1.5T is fully lit, ventilated, and open on both ends. New technology means the machine is much quieter than older MRI scanners. In many cases, images are now taken in a much shorter amount of time than in previous models.
The Ambition 1.5T features a “virtually open” MRI design with ambient lighting, audio, and video features. You can choose to listen to music or watch an immersive video during your scan to help prevent MRI claustrophobia and anxiety. Memory foam on the scanner table also improves your comfort during MRI exams.
Getting Ready for Your MRI Appointment
Your provider will give you instructions to prepare for your appointment, including leaving jewelry and other metal items at home so they don’t interfere with the magnets in the MRI machine.
In addition to following these instructions, do something calming for yourself before your appointment, such as taking a walk in the park or singing along to your favorite song in the car. Putting in your earbuds and listening to a guided meditation or relaxing music in the waiting room may also decrease stress.
Some people find bringing a friend or family member with them helpful. Companions may need to stay in the waiting room. Still, knowing a loved one is close by may make you feel more secure.
Managing MRI Claustrophobia and Anxiety During the Procedure
When you enter the room for your MRI scan, your radiology technologist will give you instructions on what to do. Feel free to ask questions. If it helps you feel more relaxed, they can also give you an overview of the machine and how it works.
After answering your questions, your technologist will help you get in position and as comfortable as possible for the scanning process. If you choose to listen to music or watch an immersive video, they will set that up for you.
During the MRI scan, the technologist will ask you to stay still and hold your breath for a few seconds at a time, allowing them to take clear images. Between moments of holding your breath, taking slow, deep breaths will help you stay calm.
If you have severe anxiety or claustrophobia, your provider may be able to prescribe medication to help you relax during the MRI exam, although medication is not typically needed. Talk with your healthcare provider to learn more about this option.
You Are in Control
The MRI machine has a built-in speaker and microphone, allowing you and your technologist to communicate clearly and as often as you need. If, at any point during the MRI procedure, you begin to feel overwhelmed or feel a panic attack coming on, you can always ask them to pause the exam. Knowing you’re in control at all times can help ease MRI claustrophobia and anxiety and allow you to have a positive experience.
