TULSA, Explained

The cutting-edge TULSA procedure is a modern, non- invasive method for addressing prostate problems. This FDA-approved technique employs focused heat to ablate, or eliminate, specific areas of concerning tissue.

In the past, men with a small mass in their prostate had to undergo complete removal of the entire prostate. However, by precisely delivering heat using directional ultrasound and MRI technology, interventional radiologists can internally treat the prostate, helping preserve men’s functional abilities.

The TULSA procedure involves no incisions, no exposure to radiation, and no significant surgery.

Who Is Eligible for TULSA?

Whether a patient qualifies for the TULSA procedure is to be determined on a case-by-case basis. In general, eligible patients can be any age and should have:

A low to intermediate risk prostate tumor

Tumors that are confined to the prostate and have not spread

No history of calcium deposits in the prostate

How TULSA Works

During the TULSA procedure, an interventional radiologist uses targeted heat within the urethra to access a larger portion of the prostate tissue. This process results in a consistent and sweeping heating pattern, decreasing the chance of overlooking any areas.

Real-time MRI monitors the healing of the tissue within and around the prostate. Modifications and adjustments can be made on the fly, enabling the procedure to be very controlled and predictable. The TULSA procedure system automatically follows the ablation instructions set by the interventional radiologist, limiting the destruction to the specified boundary lines and minimizing the potential for human error.

Same-Day Outpatient Procedure

TULSA is a fully customizable one-and-done procedure. Interventional radiologists can perform TULSA in a single session that takes a few hours, eliminating the need for multiple visits and allowing you to take minimal time off work, spend less time in the hospital, and have more time for your daily life.

Patients typically resume normal activities swiftly, with erectile and urinary functions returning to baseline in approximately three months.

Research indicates the TULSA procedure can:

Reduce overall prostate size by over 80%

Reduce PSA levels in the blood by 95%

Allow 75% of patients to maintain or regain sexual function after treatment
