Who is eligible for a low-dose lung CT scan?
In New York State, only 28% of lung cancers are detected at an early stage. This is because lung cancer symptoms, including chronic coughing or difficulty breathing, often mean the disease is already progressing.
Treatment is easier and outcomes are better if you start lung cancer screenings before symptoms appear, so don’t delay your care. You may qualify for this 10-minute, life-saving screening if you:
Are between 50 and 80 years old
Currently smoke or have quit within the last 15 years
Have a 20 pack-year smoking history*
*To calculate your pack-year history, multiply the number of years you smoked by the number of packs of cigarettes you smoked per day.
What is a lung cancer screening?
A low-dose lung cancer screening is a detailed, painless CT scan of the chest. Low amounts of radiation help to show lung cancer at early stages that may be hard to see on an X-ray.
