WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF 3D MAMMOGRAPHY?
3D Mammography (also called Tomosynthesis) is the most important advancement in breast cancer imaging in decades. Clinical studies have shown that 3D mammography is more accurate than conventional mammography alone, detecting smaller cancers earlier, when the disease is most treatable. In addition, 3D mammography has been proven to reduce “call-backs” or false positives by up to 40 percent, minimizing additional tests.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING THE EXAM?
You will see little difference in how your mammogram is performed, and there is a comparable radiation dose to a traditional mammogram. The X-Ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over the breast, taking multiple images in a matter of 4 additional seconds. High-powered computing then converts the images into a 3D rendering to be examined by your Radiologist one page or one millimeter “slice” at a time.
IS 3D MAMMOGRAPHY A SEPARATE EXAM OR PART OF MY USUAL MAMMOGRAM?
The 3D Mammography imaging is a separate procedure code, however, it can be performed at the same time as your regular exam. You will likely not notice a difference from your regular exam.
WHAT IS THE COST?
Beginning January 2015, 3D Mammography has been established as a covered service by most insurance carriers. As with many imaging exams, if your contract requires a co-pay or deductible, please feel free to submit through your health savings or flexible spending account.
WHAT IF I HAVE REPORTED PAIN OR A LUMP ON MY BREAST?
If you have signs or symptoms of breast disease, a 3D Diagnostic mammogram will likely be indicated. Unlike a screening study, the diagnostic exam is performed on patients with signs or symptoms, prior surgical history for breast disease, patients with a possible abnormality detected on screening mammogram or on patients who had prior imaging findings requiring specific shorter term follow up. As with most diagnostic imaging exams, if your contract requires a co-pay or deductible, please feel free to submit through your health savings or flexible spending account.
WHAT IF A WOMEN’S DOCTOR DOES NOT MENTION 3D MAMMOGRAPHY TO HER?
While education is now widespread, 3D Mammography is still considered an optional service that can be elected by the patient. Feedback from both referring Physicians and patients has been very positive.
