GOVERNOR CUOMO’S INITIATIVE TO IMPROVE ACCESS TO BREAST CANCER SCREENING AMONG THE MOST AGGRESSIVE IN THE NATION

Good news for women in WNY and across the state. Governor Cuomo, the Senate and Assembly have agreed to one of the most aggressive actions in the nation to improve access to breast cancer screening. Groundbreaking initiatives under S08093/A10679 will help more women access the breast cancer screening services they need and deserve. The new law will eliminate cost-sharing for diagnostic imaging for breast cancer, including diagnostic mammograms, and breast ultrasounds, as well as breast MRIs for those women at high risk for breast cancer. As a result, women in need of tests other than standard mammograms will not have to pay any additional out-of-pocket expenses for these most common diagnostic tests. Many of us at Windsong are heartened to hear of this new law which will assist so many of our patients who have seen their covered screening mammogram transition to an uncovered diagnostic mammogram because of a concerning pain or lump. Insurance will no longer be able to deny coverage of these life saving diagnostic exams.

According to the new law, beginning January 1, 2017 screening and diagnostic imaging for the detection of breast cancer is covered under the policy and shall not be subject to annual deductibles or coinsurance. Copays will apply. Windsong is pleased to see the state’s commitment to giving women the resources they need to live a long and healthy life.

PROSTATE MRI, A GAME CHANGER FOR PROSTATE CANCER SCREENING

Other than lung cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American men. The American Cancer Society estimates 180,890 new cases and 26, 120 deaths from prostate cancer each year. Fortunately, screening and early detection of prostate cancer is saving lives.

Patients can now benefit from a more sensitive and targeted screening approach with a 3T MRI. “Prostate MRI has revolutionized how we diagnose prostate cancer,” says Dr. Raja Cheruvu, who oversees the prostate cancer detection team at Windsong. “It enables us to find disease earlier than today’s conventional ultrasound guided tests, and is a noninvasive way to rule out cancer and relieve anxiety for many men who have an elevated PSA.”

Prostate MRI is a game changer. It allows radiologists to better visualize the prostate gland and determine if a biopsy is needed. Windsong is the first to offer this technology, which is essentially the male version of the mammogram. 3T MRI is non-invasive, painless, and procures high resolution images of the prostate gland. It offers increased sensitivity and improved accuracy in localizing prostate cancer. It is appropriate for patients with an elevated or rising PSA level, as well as those who have had benign TRUS biopsies.
These exams are available at Windsong’s Williamsville location.

HEADACHE RELIEF THAT LASTS

Millions of Americans experience migraines. An innovative noninvasive treatment at Windsong has shown remarkable results. Dr. Dana Dunleavy, Director of Windsong Interventional Radiology Services said, “Over 1000 SPG blocks have been performed at Windsong, with preliminary data showing that the vast majority of patients have significant symptom relief from their migraines after only one treatment.”

Treatment is administered through the nasal cavities using image guidance to assure appropriate medication delivery. This non-invasive procedure has minimal risks and is covered by most insurances when deemed appropriate following an office consultation.

WINDSONG AFFILIATE ADDS GENETIC COUNSELOR

BENEFITS OF GENETIC COUNSELING AND TESTING

While there is no guaranteed way to prevent cancer, genetic counseling and testing can help individuals better understand their risks for certain types of cancer.

Laura Fisher, MS, CGC, a Certified Genetic Counselor with Windsong’s affiliate, Windsong Medical Alliance, PLLC, says, “Genetic testing has changed immensely in recent years. Even patients who had genetic testing just a few years ago may be eligible for additional testing of newly recognized genes.”

While genetic testing is not appropriate for everyone, individuals with a personal history or strong family history of cancer may be candidates. Two of the most common genes that cause hereditary breast and ovarian cancer are BRCA1 and BRCA2; however, we now know of nearly 50 genes that can cause increased risks of cancer.

Fisher explains that mutations in hereditary cancer genes can be inherited from either your mother or your father. Furthermore, cancer gene mutations can be passed on to both daughters and sons. “There is a misconception that ‘breast cancer genes’ will only affect female relatives. However, many genes that put an individual at an increased risk of breast cancer can also increase the risk of other cancer types, such as colon or thyroid cancer, which can occur in both men and women.”

Patients being counseled are asked a number of questions about their medical and family histories, both of which contribute to the risk for an inherited predisposition to cancer. Fisher says, “Certified genetic counselors are trained to interpret medical and family histories, assess risk, and educate patients about testing options, management, and prevention.” Genetic counselors are also acutely aware of the implications genetic testing may have on other family members. “Genetics is a family affair. It can be difficult information to receive, but sometimes even more difficult to share with family members.” Fisher emphasizes that the goal is for this information to be empowering.

Testing is often performed on a blood or saliva sample. Fisher says, “It’s important to note that even if a hereditary cancer gene mutation is present in your family, you will not automatically inherit the mutation. Similarly, having a mutation is not a guarantee that you will develop cancer in your lifetime.”

We encourage our patients to speak with their doctors about the consideration of genetic testing and whether or not they may be a candidate for genetic testing. Patients interested in counseling can call (716) 626-6300.

NEUROQUANT® MRI ASSISTS WITH DEMENTIA DIAGNOSIS

Windsong’s neuroradiologist, Dr. Igor Mikityansky, utilizes a breakthrough software – the age-related atrophy report provided by NeuroQuant®- which automatically segments and measures volumes of brain structures and compares them to a unique normative database. These valuable measurements are a part of a routine brain MRI exam for patients with related symptoms and aid in the assessment of neurodegenerative conditions. This is done with no added cost to the patient.

The use of this cutting edge technology, along with the Mesial Temporal Volume evaluation for seizure patients and multiple sclerosis plaque analysis at Windsong, have aided diagnoses of many Western New York patients and their doctors who have come to rely on Windsong’s diagnostic excellence.

WINDSONG RADIOLOGY GROUP RECEIVES REACCREDITATION FOR AMBULATORY SURGERY FACILITIES

Windsong, PC recently received re-accreditation from the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAAASF). Windsong’s AAAASF inspector again provided high marks for attention to detail in adherence to AAAASF requirements and found no deficiencies in the Interventional Radiology Department located at 55 Spindrift Drive in Williamsville, NY.

The three year re-accreditation through AAAASF is a strong symbol of quality. “Windsong continues to set the highest standards for interventional procedures requiring conscious sedation,” says Dr. Dana Dunleavy, Director of Interventional Services at Windsong.“ Interventional services have grown significantly over the last few years, and Windsong believes the certification is extremely important to ensure the very best care for our patients.

This re-accreditation allows patients to undergo procedures such as kyphoplasty (vertebral augmentation), ovarian vein embolization, and uterine artery embolization under conscious sedation in a comfortable out-patient setting. This certification provides the same standards and benefits of sedation in the hospital, but in an atmosphere focused on quality, comfort, and convenience.

“In addition to the high standards, it’s typically at a much lower cost than the same procedure performed in a hospital setting,” says Dr. Thomas Summers, President of Windsong. “Having the ability to offer these services provides tremendous value to our patients.”

WINDSONG OFFERS REVOLUTIONARY VARICOSE VEIN TREATMENTS

Dr. J. Dana Dunleavy, Director of Windsong’s Interventional Radiology Minimally Invasive Procedure Suite (MIPS), has been offering the most advanced varicose vein treatments.

VenaSealTM requires only a single needle stick (unlike the multiple needles required for other vein interventions). This treatment does not require any anesthesia, and symptomatic improvement can be noticeable immediately following this office based procedure. Individuals are able to resume work and exercise much sooner than other treatments.

Dr. Dunleavy and his team offer all aspects of vein care for both painful varicose veins in the legs and pain/achiness/bloating in the pelvis. “Many people have pain without visible signs of bulging veins,” said Dr. Dunleavy.

Dr. Dunleavy’s specialization in endovascular procedures with fellowship training from Johns Hopkins Hospital and Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ), enables him to perform the VenaSealTM procedure. He also has extensive experience in performing radiofrequency ablation, laser, and sclerotherapy, as well as other embolization procedures including pelvic / vulvar varicose veins. To schedule a consultation, or to learn more, please call (716) 929-9484 or go to www.windsonginterventional.com

WINDSONG RADIOLOGY OFFERS NEW PROSTATE CANCER TREATMENT

Windsong is excited to announce that it is now offering a new treatment for prostate cancer patients. The drug used is Xofigo® (Ra 223 dichloride), a new therapy approved by the FDA for the treatment of castration-resistant prostate cancer, symptomatic bone metastases and no known visceral metastatic disease. Dr. Thomas Summers, president of Windsong said, “We are proud to be a new site for this treatment, which up until this point was only available at Roswell Park.”

According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer found in American men, other than skin cancer. This year alone, nearly 230,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and nearly 29,500 will die from the disease in the U.S. If prostate cancer starts to spread to other areas of the body, it most commonly goes to the bones which results in rapid tumor growth. The alpha particle-emitting isotope radium-223, which is an active ingredient in Xofigo®, mimics calcium and forms complexes at areas of increased bone turnover, such as bone metastases, hence limiting the damage to surrounding normal tissue. This cutting edge treatment option is just one more demonstration of Windsong’s commitment to bringing the latest medicines to patients. For more information, please contact Laurie Fuller at 716.631.2500, ext. 2152 or go to xofigo-us.com

IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO PRACTICES USING OLD WEB AMBASSADOR TO ACCESS REPORTS

As of 2017 the Web Ambassador will be discontinued. We are providing a significant buffer for practices to switch to the Zero Download Application (ZDA) portion of our Picture Archiving System (PACS) which allows significant flexibility for our referring providers.

The ZDA application does not require our referring providers to install any software. They simply need to have a user name to access the application from our webpage. The link can be found on the home page at the top of the screen. Simply click on “PACS login” and using the username and password received from Windsong, referring providers can easily access their patient’s records. PACS has resolved our challenges to expand our practice capabilities to interface with physicians across the continuum of care in a manner that is HIPAA compliant and nonintrusive to their practices. The Web Ambassador passwords will work with the ZDA. However, if you are in need of a password, please email Janiene Lurz at jlurz@windsongradiology.com or call her at 716.631.2500 ext. 2249.

WILLIAMSVILLE – September 9, 2016 – Windsong, PC recently received re-accreditation from the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities. (AAAASF) After many weeks of review Windsong’s the AAAASF inspector found no deficiencies in the Interventional Radiology Department located at 55 Spindrift Drive in Williamsville, NY.

The three year reaccreditation through AAAASF is a strong symbol of quality. “Windsong continues to set the highest standards for interventional procedures requiring conscious sedation,” says Tammy Day, Manager of the Interventional Services Program. “Our Interventional services have grown significantly over the last few years, and we believe the certification is extremely important to ensure the very best care for our patients.”

“This accreditation allows patients to comfortably undergo procedures such as kyphoplasty (vertebral augmentation) and fibroid embolization under conscious sedation in an out-patient setting,” adds Dr. Dana Dunleavy, Director of Interventional Services. “Same stringent standards as you would find in a hospital, but in an atmosphere focused on comfort, service and safety,” he added.

AAAASF was established in 1980 to standardize and improve the quality of health care in outpatient facilities. AAAASF accredits thousands of facilities world-wide, making it one of the largest not-for-profit outpatient accrediting organizations. Physicians, clinicians, legislators, state/federal health agencies and patients acknowledge that AAAASF sets the “Gold Standard in Accreditation” through the following ways:

  • holds outpatient and office-based facilities to hospital standards
  • requires surgeons to be board certified and have hospital privileges for any procedure they perform
  • Allows procedures to be performed under conscious sedation in a safe environment
  • requires a safe and clean surgical environment that meets stringent standards
  • requires peer review (peer oversight) and tracks data for thousands of individual cases

“In addition to the high standards, it’s typically at a much lower cost than the same procedure performed in a hospital setting,” says Dr. Thomas Summers, President of Windsong. “We’ve worked with our local referring physicians and insurance carriers to educate them about the advantages and contain expenses to the health care system without having a negative effect on quality. It’s a delicate balance and it demands our attention on a daily basis.”

WILLIAMSVILLE – August 22, 2016 – Windsong’s comprehensive and integrated care model is now further enhanced with the addition of Laura Fisher, MS, CGC, a Certified Genetic Counselor who has joined its affiliate, Windsong Medical Alliance, PLLC. This addition strengthens the nationally accredited Windsong Breast Care Program, a first of its kind collaborative program in WNY, designed to assist newly diagnosed breast cancer patients through coordinated care and ultimately improved outcomes.

Laura received a Master of Science in Genetic Counseling from Boston University and has most recently provided genetic counseling at Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo. “We are incredibly fortunate to have Laura join us. She is enthusiastic about her new role with Windsong and the breast care program. She is a dedicated and intelligent counselor committed to offering a compassionate, informative environment for patients seeking genetic counseling,” said Dr. Thomas Summers, President of Windsong, PC.

The field of genetic counseling is on the rise and counselors like Laura have become essential to healthcare. According to the National Society of Genetic Counselors, the field has grown 75 percent since 2006. As healthcare moves in the direction of personalized medicine, counselors will be vital to the care of patients. Genetic counselors know all too well that cancer gene testing does not provide a simple “yes” or “no” answer to the question of whether individuals will get cancer.

Genetic counseling educates individuals, assesses risk, and helps patients to interpret genetic test results. Laura helps patients understand how results of genetic testing may impact their health, mental and emotional well-being, and family members. Laura’s expertise helps patients determine if they should consider testing at all.  As Laura stated, “With genetic testing for inherited cancer predisposition becoming more widely available and increasingly complex, it is my goal to provide patients with the counseling and education needed to help them make informed decisions.”

The goal of Windsong Medical Alliance, PLLC is to continue the legacy of excellence begun by Dr. Janet Sung and Windsong PC back in 1987.  Laura will work collaboratively with the Windsong Breast Care program, the first breast care program in WNY to be accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). The NAPBC designation is only given to those centers that have demonstrated a commitment to providing the highest level of quality breast care. The team works diligently to provide early detection, accurate diagnosis, prompt consults and state-of-the-art treatment, all balanced with survivorship support.

Windsong Medical Alliance is headquartered at 55 Spindrift Drive in Williamsville. To learn more please call 626-6300.

NEUROQUANT® MRI IMPROVES EARLY DETECTION OF DEMENTIA AND ALZHEIMER’S

Windsong offers a state of the art technology called NeuroQuant® to improve the early detection and treatment of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The MRI software precisely measures the brain atrophy (shrinkage) by measuring the size of the hippocampus and other brain structures that typically deteriorate with these disorders. Information obtained enables the patient’s neurologist to make a diagnosis and follow the progression of the disease.
spring2
The NeuroQuant® software has the ability to evaluate the patient’s MRI for brain atrophy. The results of the exam are compared to an FDA-approved database of people of the same age that have healthy brains. It can help provide an early warning for patients who have Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI).

NeuroQuant® can also help a patient’s neurologist to measure the impact of their treatments and assist in identifying those patients most likely to benefit from aggressive intervention.

Unfortunately, normal-sized brain structures can’t rule out dementia, however, high-functioning patients concerned about mild, but increasing, memory loss can be reassured by results that fall in the normal range.

NeuroQuant® MRI is available at Windsong’s Williamsville location. Call 716.631.2500 for more information or to make an appointment. For more information on NeuroQuant®, visit www.cortechslabs.com/neuroquant

REDUCING PAIN AND IMPROVING OUTCOMES IN PATIENTS WITH SPINAL COMPRESSION FRACTURES

spring4Nearly 750,000 Vertebral Compression Fractures (VCFs) are caused by osteoporosis each year. Studies show that osteoporosis causes twice as many spinal fractures than hip fractures, yet VCFs often go undiagnosed and untreated. It is estimated that two-thirds of VCFs are never diagnosed. Windsong is pleased to offer an advanced technology for patients suffering from these debilitating fractures.

Dr. Dana Dunleavy is one of a select number of providers across the country to offer Kiva VCF treatment, a cutting edge treatment for vertebral compression fractures. As the only provider in Central and Western New York to offer this procedure, Dr. Dunleavy stated, “The results of this unique coil guidewire are exceptional. This is a wonderful alternative to surgical intervention which has demonstrated a reduction in deformity (less kyphosis), as well as a reduction in leakage into surrounding tissue.” In addition, a 2015 economic analysis reported the Kiva treatment has shown a significant reduction in cost to the healthcare system due to a reduced risk in adjacent-level fractures.

To schedule an osteoporotic or oncologic patient for a consultation with Dr. Dunleavy, please call the direct line at 716.929.9484

ADDING ORDER NOTES

Many of Windsong’s referring providers have a need to specify areas of the body to image or may need to include special instructions.  When doing so, we request that practices not use the Fax Cover Sheet for this type of notation, as it is often discarded after receipt. For those practices using Medent, there is a button in the order screen for Order Notes. Anything typed in Order Notes will appear on the script above the actual test which has been ordered as noted in the image. If you have any questions, please contact Gina Fedele at (716) 631-2500 at extension 2240

WINDSONG RADIOLOGY IN HONOR OF MOTHER’S DAY EVENT TO HIGHLIGHT IMPORTANCE OF ANNUAL SCREENING AND EARLY DETECTION

WILLIAMSVILLE – March 21, 2016 – An In Honor of Mother’s Day Reception will be held at Windsong P.C. on Tuesday, May 3rd at 5:30 PM at Windsong Medical Park at 55 Spindrift Drive in Williamsville. This free community event will highlight the importance of annual breast screening for women 40 and older.

“The recently published American Cancer Society (ACS) breast screening guidelines have caused significant confusion for many women,” said Dr. Anna Chen, Windsong’s Director of Women’s Imaging. In order to reduce the confusion Windsong invites mothers, daughters, sisters and friends to learn more about Windsong’s recommendations for breast screening. These breast screening recommendations mirror the Society of Breast Imaging and the American College of Radiology’s guidelines for women over the age of 40 to be screened annually.

“Windsong strongly encourages women to obtain the maximum life saving benefits from mammography by continuing with an annual screening schedule,” stated Dr. Anna Chen. “We have seen firsthand how annual screening for women age 40 and older can lead to early detection.”

WGRZ’s news anchor, Melissa Holmes, will also be on hand to introduce a distinct and dedicated group of women who have assisted with educating women throughout our community about the importance of annual breast cancer screening and the benefits of early detection. These Early Detection Champions and others like them are invited to sign the Wall of Early Detection Champions which will make its debut that evening.

Studies show that women with greater than average risk for breast cancer greatly benefit from the 3D mammography technology which can detect breast cancer in its earlier stages. Windsong continues its commitment to “personalized screening” which considers the breast density and risk of the patient. This screening method ensures the most advanced technology is offered to the patient based upon their personal history. This may include 3D tomosynthesis mammograms, ultrasound and/or MRI.

EVIDENCE SUPPORTS ROLE OF CALCIUM SCORING EXAM

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women, accounting for nearly 25 percent of all deaths each year. The additional burden placed on the US healthcare system amounts to nearly $110 billion in healthcare services, medication and lost productivity.

According to research out of Johns Hopkins in 2014, the presence of calcium deposits in arteries of the heart is a powerful predictor of cardiovascular disease risk. Coronary calcium scores are a marker of biologic aging according to lead investigator, Cathy Handy, MD, MPH, an internal medicine resident at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. The cardiac CT for calcium scoring is a non-invasive screening tool. It uses high speed CT to scan the heart and measure the total load of calcified (hardened) plaque in the coronary arteries to detect the presence of coronary artery disease at an early age. The presence and degree of calcification visible on CT scans of the arteries of the heart determine the calcium score of the individual.

The Johns Hopkins study demonstrated that individuals with small but detectable deposits of calcium buildup had twice the cardiovascular risk of people with plaque-free arteries. The fi ndings also suggest that calcium buildup also predicts elevated risk for cancer, lung disease, hip fractures and chronic kidney disease.

The Cardiac CT is recommended for men over 45 and women over 55 with the following risk factors:

  • Family or personal history of heart disease
  • Past or present cigarette smoking
  • High cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure

HELP FOR CHRONIC PELVIC PAIN

Causes of chronic pelvic pain are varied, but are often associated with pelvic varicose veins also known as pelvic congestion syndrome (PCS) when other etiologies are not found such as uterine/ovarian abnormalities. Signs of PCS may include irritable bladder, varicose veins on vulva, buttocks or thigh and leg swelling / varicose veins.

PCS is similar to varicose veins in the legs. Both result when the valves in the vein become weakened and do not close properly allowing blood to fl ow backwards and pool in the vein causing pressure and bulging veins. Since this worsens with sitting/standing (due to backup from gravity), symptoms often worsen throughout the day.

Common signs:

  • Leg/pelvic/buttock pain, aching or cramping
  • Pelvic discomfort and fullness throughout the month
  • Pelvic bloating
  • Pain/aching with and/or after intercourse
  • Pelvic/abdominal tenderness

Symptoms may be worse:

  • After standing for long periods of time
  • Following intercourse
  • During menstrual periods
  • During/following pregnancy

PCS is most common in 30 – 50 year old women. Other factors that may increase risk include a history of varicose veins, two or more pregnancies, polycystic ovaries and hormonal dysfunction.

Dr. Dana Dunleavy, director of Windsong’s Interventional Radiology team, can evaluate for pelvic congestion syndrome using a specialized ultrasound. Treatment for PCS at Windsong involves an outpatient minimally invasive procedure carried out under local anesthesia with intravenous sedation, to assure patient comfort. A small catheter is placed into the vein to perform a diagnostic venogram. Blood supply to the pelvic varices is then blocked by the use of surgical plugs and/or embolic agents. The blood is then rerouted from the damaged veins, into healthy veins. After the procedure, patients can return home or to work immediately.

If you have patients that could benefit from a consultation, please have them contact the Interventional Radiology appointment line at (716) 929-9484.

NEW VARICOSE VEIN TREATMENT OFFERED AT WINDSONG

On December 15, 2015 Windsong’s Interventional Radiology clinic became the very first facility in the greater Western New York area to perform the VenaSeal™  closure system procedure for venous reflux / varicose veins. There is currently only one other area in New York State that has utilized this cutting edge technology. This procedure is performed by Dr. Dunleavy, who is board certified with fellowship training in Interventional Radiology from Johns Hopkins Hospital.  He also holds a Certificate of Added Qualification in Vascular / Interventional Radiology.

The VenaSeal™ treatment is a new minimally invasive procedure which uses an advanced medical adhesive to close the diseased vein in patients with symptomatic venous reflux disease.

Venous reflux disease occurs when valves in the veins of the lower leg no longer function properly. This allows blood to flow backward, or reflux, resulting in enlarged or varicose veins as well as other symptoms such as swelling and heaviness.

“Varicose veins may be a sign of a more serious condition known as chronic venous insufficiency, which in severe cases can result in lifestylelimiting lower leg pain, swelling, skin damage and ulcerations,” said Dr. Dana Dunleavy, Director of Interventional Radiology at Windsong.

Windsong’s commitment to state of the art technology reaches far beyond breast imaging with the addition of the VenaSeal™ procedure. Clinical trials have shown that this closure system often has minimal to no bruising and allows patients to return to normal activities quickly. Unique to the VenaSeal™ treatment is that only one needle stick is needed, eliminating the need for the additional injections of local anesthetic around the treated vein – unlike endovenous laser ablation or radiofrequency ablation.

As a new FDA approved procedure, the VenaSeal™ does not currently have a procedure code and is not currently covered by medical insurance, and is therefore only available as a self pay option. Other treatment techniques which do have a procedure code and are covered by insurance are also offered at Windsong’s vein practice.

To schedule a consultation, please contact Windsong’s Interventional Radiology clinic at (716) 929-9484.

MAMMOGRAPHY GUIDELINES

Windsong Screening Mammography Recommendations

Breast cancer is the most prevalent type of cancer (excluding skin cancer) and accounts for more than 40,000 of all cancer-related deaths in American women (2nd only to lung cancer). One of every 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.

Why all the fuss over mammograms?

As you might know, the USPSTF and more recently, the American Cancer Society, have made recommendations contrary to the American College of Radiology (ACR), the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG), the Society of Breast Imaging (SBI), the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), and the American Medical Association (AMA). In accordance with the long standing guidelines adopted by the American College of Radiology, Society for Breast Imaging, ACOG, Windsong strongly recommends women begin ANNUAL screening mammograms at age 40. Women with a family history of breast cancer should consult their physician about when to start mammography and if additional imaging is needed.

It should be noted that the new American Cancer Society breast screening guidelines and previous data used by the United States Preventive Services Task Force to create their recommendations, acknowledge that starting annual screening at age 40 saves the most lives.

LOW DOSE LUNG CANCER SCREENING

Most have heard that an annual low-dose chest computed tomography (CT) for lung cancer is an eligible screening benefit for any patient with insurance that meets the screening requirements, however some confusion lies around who is eligible.

Who is eligible for an annual low dose lung cancer screening CT?

Patients between 55-80 years old (55-77, if Medicare) who are current or former smokers with at least a 30 pack-year history of cigarette smoking who have smoked within the last 15 years are eligible. Once referred to Windsong, patients will be evaluated for screening and enrolled in a comprehensive program to help reduce the risk of lung cancer. The program will include smoking cessation and reminders for recommended follow up appointments.

What do you do with patients that are not eligible because of age but meet all other criteria?

Although the criteria for screening is fairly stringent, there are times when patients that are younger may receive the screening with clinical support from their physician. On those occasions when the physician feels it may be beneficial for the patient to have the exam, the recommendation would be to have the physician attempt to get authorization for the screening based upon clinical information, regardless of age. There are times when the insurers will make an exception and we feel it is best to advocate on behalf of your patients. If the authorization is denied, the patient could pay the out of pocket cost for a chest CT without contrast, about $225.

Coding Blues and IHA Patients

Please keep in mind that IHA does not recognize the S8032 code which should be submitted for Blue Cross Blue Shield patients. IHA asks that physicians code the low dose lung screening as a chest CT without contrast (71250) with a screening diagnostic code.

To make an appointment or to refer a patient, call Windsong at (716) 631-2500. For more information about the program, please contact Windsong’s Lung Patient Navigator, Tracey Supples at (716) 631-2500 ext. 2183

NEW MAMMOGRAPHY GUIDELINES – WHAT YOUR PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW

The new American Cancer Society guidelines have caused some confusion for patients. It should be noted that these recommendations focus largely on making patients better informed about breast screening false positive statistics and age determined breast cancer risks. According to the recent report, women aged 40 to 44 years who choose to be screened should do so annually, and women 55 years and older should have the opportunity to continue annual screening.

Windsong supports the Society of Breast Imaging, The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the American College of Radiology’s recommendations for women to get yearly mammograms starting at the age of 40. In 2014 alone, more than 200,000 American women were diagnosed with an invasive form of breast cancer and 20% were under the age of 50. “Windsong strongly encourages women aged 40 and older to obtain the maximum life saving benefits from mammography by continuing with an annual screening schedule,” stated Dr. Anna Chen, director of Women’s Imaging at Windsong. “We have seen firsthand how annual screening for women age 40 and older can lead to early detection.”

Windsong will continue its commitment to “personalized screening” which considers the breast density and risk of the patient. This screening method ensures the most advanced technology is offered to the patient based upon their personal history, which may include 3D tomosynthesis mammograms, ultrasound and/or MRI. To assist you with educating your patients, we recommend a video resource which can be found HERE

3D GUIDED BREAST BIOPSIES COMPLIMENT 3D MAMMOGRAPHY

Our Williamsville location is the only facility in the area to offer 3D breast biopsy to compliment our 3D mammography (breast tomosynthesis). This upright biopsy unit allows our radiologists to locate and biopsy subtle areas identified only on the 3D mammogram and allows more improved access to areas closer to the chest wall. With its dual stereotactic and 3D biopsy capabilities, it allows for improved targeting which may shorten patient procedure time and reduce radiation dose due to fewer exposures.

SOLID GASTRIC EMPTYING STUDIES NOW OFFERED IN WILLIAMSVILLE

Solid Gastric EmptyingWindsong’s Williamsville location is now offering gastric emptying studies. This nuclear medicine procedure is performed to determine how fast food leaves the stomach. The patient ingests a small amount of radioactivity mixed with oatmeal, and then the stomach is imaged for an average of 90 minutes. From this, computerized images are generated which can determine if there is a delayed emptying.

Doctors may order this study for adults and children who frequently vomit, feel bloated after eating, or complain of abdominal pain. In preparation for this study, patients should not eat or drink anything for four to six hours before they have the specially prepared food when they arrive for the study.

Patients will be asked for their medication list when scheduling, as some drugs affect the results of this exam. For more information, please call 716.631.2500
