LAURIE FULLER NOMINATED AS HEALTHCARE CHAMPION

Our very own Laurie Fuller, B.S., CNMT was chosen as one of Business First’s Health Care Champions! As CT, MRI, Nuclear Medicine and PET/CT Department manager, she has the responsibility to oversee a department that works with some of our frailest patients. As Dr. Thomas Summers, Windsong’s President stated, “Our practice cares for many newly diagnosed breast cancer and oncology patients. Laurie is highly sensitive to the concerns and needs of these patients at a time in their life when they are most in need of support.” Staff that know Laurie, know firsthand that she evokes an especially positive and caring attitude while maintaining a department on the cutting edge of imaging technology. She also leads her department’s research participation.

We are so proud and happy that Laurie is a part of the Windsong Team!

NEUROQUANT® MRI IMPROVES EARLY DETECTION OF DEMENTIA AND ALZHEIMER’S

Windsong offers a state of the art technology called NeuroQuant® to improve the early detection and treatment of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The MRI software precisely measures the brain atrophy (shrinkage) by measuring the size of the hippocampus and other brain structures that typically deteriorate with these disorders. Information obtained enables the patient’s neurologist to make a diagnosis and follow the progression of the disease.

The NeuroQuant® software has the ability to evaluate the patient’s MRI for brain atrophy. The results of the exam are compared to an FDA-approved database of people of the same age that have healthy brains. It can help provide an early warning for patients who have Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI).

NeuroQuant® can also help a patient’s neurologist to measure the impact of their treatments and assist in identifying those patients most likely to benefit from aggressive intervention.

Unfortunately, normal-sized brain structures can’t rule out dementia, however, high-functioning patients concerned about mild, but increasing, memory loss can be reassured by results that fall in the normal range.

NeuroQuant® MRI is available at Windsong’s Williamsville location. Call 716.631.2500 for more information or to make an appointment. For more information on NeuroQuant®, visit www.cortechslabs.com/neuroquant

REDUCING PAIN AND IMPROVING OUTCOMES IN PATIENTS WITH SPINAL COMPRESSION FRACTURES

Nearly 750,000 Vertebral Compression Fractures (VCFs) are caused by osteoporosis each year. Studies show that osteoporosis causes twice as many spinal fractures than hip fractures, yet VCFs often go undiagnosed and untreated. It is estimated that two-thirds of VCFs are never diagnosed. Windsong is pleased to offer an advanced technology for patients suffering from these debilitating fractures.

Dr. Dana Dunleavy is one of a select number of providers across the country to offer Kiva VCF treatment, a cutting edge treatment for vertebral compression fractures. As the only provider in Central and Western New York to offer this procedure, Dr. Dunleavy stated, “The results of this unique coil guidewire are exceptional. This is a wonderful alternative to surgical intervention which has demonstrated a reduction in deformity (less kyphosis), as well as a reduction in leakage into surrounding tissue.” In addition, a 2015 economic analysis reported the Kiva treatment has shown a significant reduction in cost to the healthcare system due to a reduced risk in adjacent-level fractures.

To schedule an osteoporotic or oncologic patient for a consultation with Dr. Dunleavy, please call the direct line at 716.929.9484

ADDING ORDER NOTES

Many of Windsong’s referring providers have a need to specify areas of the body to image or may need to include special instructions.  When doing so, we request that practices not use the Fax Cover Sheet for this type of notation, as it is often discarded after receipt. For those practices using Medent, there is a button in the order screen for Order Notes. Anything typed in Order Notes will appear on the script above the actual test which has been ordered as noted in the image. If you have any questions, please contact Gina Fedele at (716) 631-2500 at extension 2240

DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING EDUCATION IN THE COMMUNITY

Windsong’s radiologists are busy physicians, yet they find time to educate the community about a number of diagnostic imaging topics throughout the year. Dr. David Wolf shared his time on Saturday, March 5th, presenting “The Power of PET/CT,” to the Niagara Frontier Society of Radiologic Technologists Spring Symposium of Imaging Services. There were 140 attendees, including some of our very own technologists.

On Saturday, March 19th Dr. Anna Chen and Dr. Eric Snitzer presented at the WNY PA Association Annual Conference on Breast Cancer Screening and Low Dose CT Lung Cancer Screening respectively. Nearly 40 PAs were on hand to learn from the benefits of screening and early detection. On March 23rd, Dr. Chen also presented at the UB Grand Rounds on Breast Cancer Screening.

On Saturday, April 12th, a number of area physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners were on hand for a 3 credit hour CME approved Women’s Health and Diagnostic Imaging conference. Dr. J. Dana Dunleavy, Dr. Eve Li and Dr. David Wolf discussed the following: minimally invasive procedures such as migraine treatment, varicose vein treatment, spinal compression treatment, breast cancer screening exams and guidelines, as well as appropriateness criteria to ensure the right test is ordered at the right time. A special thank you to our dedicated team of physicians who continue to share their knowledge to improve care in our community.

IN HONOR OF MOTHER’S DAY RECEPTION MAY 3

An In Honor of Mother’s Day Reception was held at Windsong P.C. on Tuesday, May 3rd at Windsong Medical Park at 55 Spindrift Drive in Williamsville. This free community event highlighted the importance of annual breast screening for women 40 and older. Mothers, daughters, sisters and friends were invited to join Dr. Anna Chen, Windsong’s director of women’s imaging, and learn more about Windsong’s recommendations for breast screening.

WGRZ’s news anchor, Melissa Holmes, was also on hand to introduce our Champions of Early Detection. The women that donated time to be in our “I did for me” 3D mammography campaign were on hand and invited to be the first to sign our new Wall of Early Detection Champions.

WINDSONG TEAM CLIMBS TO THE TOP

On March 12th, staff from Windsong participated in the American Lung Association Fight for Air Climb at the HSBC Tower. This climb, which was not for the faint of heart, involved climbing 35 flights of stairs. That’s 800 steps!

Our energetic team consisted of Windsong staff Karen Boehringer, Jennifer Boettcher, Nicole Boldt, Dawn Frey, Laurie Goedtel, Nikki Lahr, Andrea Light, Emily Mangiafesto, Julie Miszuk, Kathy Nowicki, Tammy Richley, Dr. Scott Rudzinski, Jodi Sundberg, Tracey Supples and Jeanette Vega as well as Jami Schmid. They all agreed that this was an event that focused on team success. Team members’ strong encouragement enabled those that were struggling to finish the climb. We are so proud of our team for all that they have accomplished.

Bravo to the Windsong Team who trained for and met their Climb challenge! Thanks to their fundraising efforts a donation of $1500 has been made to the American Lung Association. As a provider of low dose CT lung cancer screening, our team is well aware of the benefits of healthy lungs and early detection. Windsong is a part of the fight.

NEW WINDSONG & EMAILING SCRIPTS

Many of our providers use the Windsong script pads when ordering imaging exams for their patients. We have recently revised them with helpful suggestions from some of our referring offices. Unfortunately, many of the minimally and non invasive treatments in our Minimally Invasive Procedure Suite at 55 Spindrift Drive in Williamsville are not listed on the old pink scripts. Please contact Gina Fedele at 631-2500, ext. 2240 or email her at gfedele@windsongradiology.com to receive the updated white with pink border scripts.

If you prefer to send HIPAA secure encrypted email with your patients scripts, please send to scripts@windsongradiology.com
