Genetic Counselor, Laura Fisher, MS, CGC, Joins Windsong Medical Alliance, PLLC

WILLIAMSVILLE – August 22, 2016 – Windsong's comprehensive and integrated care model is now further enhanced with the addition of Laura Fisher, MS, CGC, a Certified Genetic Counselor who has joined its affiliate, Windsong Medical Alliance, PLLC. This addition strengthens the nationally accredited Windsong Breast Care Program, a first of its kind collaborative program in WNY, designed to assist newly diagnosed breast cancer patients through coordinated care and ultimately improved outcomes.

Laura received a Master of Science in Genetic Counseling from Boston University and has most recently provided genetic counseling at Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo. "We are incredibly fortunate to have Laura join us. She is enthusiastic about her new role with Windsong and the breast care program. She is a dedicated and intelligent counselor committed to offering a compassionate, informative environment for patients seeking genetic counseling," said Dr. Thomas Summers, President of Windsong, PC.

The field of genetic counseling is on the rise and counselors like Laura have become essential to healthcare. According to the National Society of Genetic Counselors, the field has grown 75 percent since 2006. As healthcare moves in the direction of personalized medicine, counselors will be vital to the care of patients. Genetic counselors know all too well that cancer gene testing does not provide a simple "yes" or "no" answer to the question of whether individuals will get cancer.

Genetic counseling educates individuals, assesses risk, and helps patients to interpret genetic test results. Laura helps patients understand how results of genetic testing may impact their health, mental and emotional well-being, and family members. Laura’s expertise helps patients determine if they should consider testing at all.  As Laura stated, “With genetic testing for inherited cancer predisposition becoming more widely available and increasingly complex, it is my goal to provide patients with the counseling and education needed to help them make informed decisions.”

The goal of Windsong Medical Alliance, PLLC is to continue the legacy of excellence begun by Dr. Janet Sung and Windsong PC back in 1987.  Laura will work collaboratively with the Windsong Breast Care program, the first breast care program in WNY to be accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). The NAPBC designation is only given to those centers that have demonstrated a commitment to providing the highest level of quality breast care. The team works diligently to provide early detection, accurate diagnosis, prompt consults and state-of-the-art treatment, all balanced with survivorship support.
